About - Far Flung Family

Hi, I'm Julia

I love travelling and have been all over the world with my husband, Matt. Going home always sucked. I wanted more – I wanted to live abroad. When my son Goobie was born, I took a career break from publishing books in London. So, when Matt’s job gave us the opportunity to move to Cyprus, we grabbed it with both hands, ready to embrace everything Cyprus has to offer. Follow us as we explore this amazing island, from the beautiful to the baffling, the exciting to the downright embarrassing.

Hello, I’m Julia and welcome to my blog!

Last year my husband came home and said he was thinking of applying for a job in Cyprus.

‘What do you think?’ he asked.

The earth wobbled on its axis as my nice, settled life in Tonbridge started to crack.  My friends, my family, my  home . . . But wasn’t travelling my Number One Passion? And hadn’t I been desperate to live abroad for my whole life? It’s been like an itch for as long as I can remember. Our life in England was so settled and nice that it felt like we were on a slippery slope to old age and, before we knew it, we’d be pensioners in the same house, living the same life. I was stagnating. I needed more. I needed an adventure.

‘Go for it.’ I replied.

And so he did – and here we are.

I was so preoccupied with The Move that it didn’t dawn on me until we were on the plane that I knew absolutely nothing about Cyprus. I had never been there and, to be totally honest (I will whisper this), I wasn’t even certain where in the Mediterranean Cyprus was.

From this position of total ignorance, this blog will chronicle our adventures and impressions of living on an island so far from home. Me, my husband Matt and our 4 year-old son, Goobie – we are here for just a few years. It will pass in the blink of an eye. So I want to appreciate every second. Soak it up. You are unlikely to find any deep cultural insights or political commentary here. Total ignorance, remember? But like the best adventures, I am discovering things as I go. So who knows?

But one thing is already certain – I love this island.
